SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City resignations and retirements under a new mayor will cost an estimated $600,000 or more.

Mayor Jackie Biskupski had asked for 33 resignations, with one severance check totaling $102,000.

Council Vice Chair Stan Penfold says the rainy day fund will help pay much of the unexpectedly large expense.

The mayor’s spokesman Matthew Rojas said in a phone interview with KUTV-TV that Biskupski checked with the city’s finance director to ensure costs could be covered.

The council is waiting on a final cost to include in the budget.

Penfold says it’s not uncommon for a new mayor to replace people, but that generally those changes happen over time.
