RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - One of the longest-serving judges on North Carolina’s intermediate-level appeals court is stepping down this spring to return to private practice.

Court of Appeals Judge Martha Geer in May will become the head of the new North Carolina office of the Cohen Milstein law firm, which is headquartered in Washington. The firm made the announcement Wednesday.

Geer is a Raleigh attorney first elected to the Court of Appeals in 2002 and re-elected eight years later. Her upcoming employer is known for handling complex civil litigation.

Gov. Pat McCrory appoints Geer’s successor through the end of the year. The appointee and other potential candidates could then run in the November election for a full eight-year term. There would be no primary to whittle down the candidates.
