IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A police captain in Iowa City has voluntarily demoted himself to the sergeant rank.
Police chief Sam Hargadine says that Doug Hart will now lead the police department’s training and accreditation program. Hart previously oversaw administrative services as one of the department’s two captains.
City manager Tom Markus says Hart’s decision to be demoted two ranks took effect Friday.
Hargadine and Markus say they can’t comment on the reasons behind the decision. Hargadine says it was Hart’s personal decision.
Hart couldn’t be reached by the Iowa City Press-Citizen (https://icp-c.com/1SSo2ty ) for comment.
Hargadine says the change won’t affect the quality of the police department’s work.
Iowa City’s human resources department Hart’s salary as sergeant will be more than $97,000. He earned nearly $110,000 each year as a captain.
