LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A homeless man accused of carjacking a woman outside of a Massachusetts auto parts store so he could go see his children in New Hampshire has been ordered held on $7,500 bail.

The Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1WqeIvW ) Maxwell Giattino pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges including carjacking and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old man admitted to police he stole the vehicle Saturday from an AutoZone in Lowell.

The woman told police she left her keys in the car and returned to find a bearded man sitting in the driver’s seat. Police say Giattino knocked her to the ground with the car door and sped off.

A defense attorney says Giattino was on a “path of destruction” due to alcohol.

A pretrial conference is scheduled for April.
