NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A former volunteer coach has pleaded guilty in a sexual assault case involving a 14-year-old North Charleston softball player.

The Post and Courier (https://bit.ly/22ErdYk ) reports 46-year-old Michael Dean Daniel made the plea Tuesday as part of an agreement to a lesser charge of second-degree assault and battery. He was originally charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Prosecutors say that in 2010, Daniel had non-consensual sex with a member of the girls’ junior varsity softball team he was volunteering to coach at Fort Dorchester High School. The victim kept the assault a secret for two years before telling law enforcement. According to court testimony, Daniel threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone.

Prosecutors say a decision on whether Daniel will be required to register as a sex offender will be made at a later date.
