BANGOR, Maine (AP) - A Maine sex offender has been formally charged with killing a 16-year-old girl who disappeared while jogging nearly 36 years ago in East Millinocket.

A grand jury returned a murder indictment against Philip Scott Fournier, who’s already being held without bail.

He had been interviewed 26 different times since 1980 before being arrested earlier this month in the death of Joyce McLain.

Prosecutors say Fournier changed his story many times over the years, at times implicating others in McLain’s death, saying he was forced to participate in the killing, or saying he had no involvement whatsoever. His lawyer noted there’s a lack of physical evidence.
