LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Perry Ellis scored 27 points, Wayne Selden Jr. added 19 points and Kansas, the top seed in the South Region, beat No. 5 seed Maryland, 79-63, on Thursday night, putting the Jayhawks back into the Elite Eight for the first time since 2012.

Landen Lucas scored 14 points and Frank Mason III added 11 points for the Jayhawks, who trailed throughout much of the first half but led, 36-34, at halftime.

Rasheed Sulaimon scored 18 points and Melo Trimble scored 17 points for Maryland, which was trying to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since it won the national championship in 2002.

The Terrapins dictated the early tempo and briefly engaged in a back-and-forth game with the Jayhawks before eventually falling behind the tournament’s overall top seed.
