ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Officials have identified a 54-year-old inmate who died in the custody of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office after experiencing a medical emergency.

Authorities said Diego Silva-Fuentes of Carolina, Puerto Rico was being housed in the medical unit of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center when he experienced a medical emergency Saturday. He was taken to the Inova Alexandria Hospital, where he died around 11:30 p.m.

Silva-Fuentes was being held at the detention center on federal charges since March 4.

The Alexandria Police Department will conduct an investigation into the death. The sheriff’s office will also conduct an internal investigation.
