RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has been sentenced to 55 years to life in prison for shooting and wounding a plainclothes police officer last year.
Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1ohLO5d) Sheldon Leftenant was sentenced Monday after being convicted in January of attempted aggravated murder and related charges in the shooting of Suffolk County Police Officer Mark Collins in Huntington Station.
Collins nearly died from a shot to the neck while trying to handcuff the 23-year-old suspect following a chase after a traffic stop.
Collins has since returned to work.
