HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police say one man is dead after a drug deal erupted in gunfire in the parking lot of a Hartford Walmart.

Investigators say one man was trying to buy marijuana from another when both pulled weapons at 4 p.m. Monday.

Thirty-four-year-old Larry Williams, of New Britain, was shot three times and pronounced dead at the hospital at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley identified the alleged shooter as 26-year-old Kenneth Reid, of Windsor. He has a valid firearms permit.

Reid turned himself in and is scheduled to face a judge Tuesday on a murder charge.

Reid told investigators he shot in self-defense after Williams tried to rob him. He directed police to a shotgun he says the victim used against him.

It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

This story has been corrected to show that the shooting occurred at about 4 p.m. Monday, not 6 p.m.
