GRETNA, La. (AP) - A Kenner man will spend his life in prison after his conviction Friday for second-degree murder and other crimes, including the pistol-whipping of his wife, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office said.
Jacoby Maize, 38, was convicted in connection with an outburst of violence on Easter Sunday of 2011. Maize was convicted of assaulting his wife and fatally shooting a neighbor, 34-year-old Justin Hendricks, who called police about it.
Maize faces a mandatory life sentence for killing Hendricks. He also was convicted on other counts, including arson. Prosecutors said he doused Hendricks’ house with gasoline and ignited it to destroy evidence.
The district attorney’s office said the jury heard testimony about Maize shooting at his wife, pistol-whipping her, slicing her left cheek with a knife and ordering her to “kiss the ground” before beating her with a baseball bat.
Maize is “nothing but a low and cowardly abuser of women,” Assistant District Attorney Doug Freese, who prosecuted the case with Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Truhe, told jurors in opening statements, according to a district attorney’s news release.
Maize accused his wife of killing Hendricks. And he called witnesses, including Jefferson Parish detectives, liars, according to prosecutors.
