ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Utility regulators will weigh whether 513,000 Public Service Company of New Mexico customers should have their meters swapped out for new devices.
KRQE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1RyIMBA) the proposal charges customers $5 starting in 2020 to begin paying the $87.2 million cost of replacing the meters. That fee would reduce annually through 2039.
The new meters would send a signal straight to the utility company, putting over 120 meter readers out of work.
If approved, New Mexico would become the 20th state to use similar meters.
PNM spokeswoman Jodi McGinnis Porter says the new meter emits about the same frequency as a modem.
The utility asked the state to decide on the meters in the next nine months.
