ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Police have identified the man who was fatally shot by a Rochester SWAT team sniper during an armed standoff earlier this week.
Officials on Wednesday say 49-year-old Phillip Vitullo of Rochester was identified through an autopsy conducted by the Monroe County medical examiner’s office.
Police were called to an apartment building on Lake Avenue early Monday morning for a report of a man brandishing a shotgun.
Officers closed off the area around the building and a SWAT team was called in. Police say Vitullo fired at least twice from inside an apartment around 6 a.m.
Police officials say he was shot once by a SWAT team member nearly three hours later as he leaned out of an apartment window with a shotgun.
No one else was injured.
