PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A western Massachusetts man accused of stabbing his pregnant girlfriend has been committed to a state hospital and will undergo a court-ordered mental health evaluation.

The Berkshire Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1TsDHkb ) Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Katy Innes argued there were no conditions under which 26-year-old Richard Martel could be released without jeopardizing the safety of the victim and the public.

Judge William Rota committed Martel to Bridgewater State Hospital and ordered him held without bail for 120 days.

Innes says the Pittsfield man wasn’t taking his prescribed medication when he allegedly stabbed the woman six times during a self-described “blackout” on Feb. 29.

Martel pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault to murder.

A pre-trial hearing is set for April 4.
