WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - Eleven graduates from the Leadership Williston program were celebrated on Wednesday, April 20, a legacy that goes back 20 years.

A luncheon was hosted at the Hampton Inn, where community leaders and former graduates celebrated the 2016 Leadership Williston class, the Williston Herald (https://bit.ly/1T0qIR5 ) reported.

With the community used as a classroom, the emerging leaders dedicated their time and talent to expanding their realm of ideas, programs, organizations, and groups available in Williston. With a better understanding of the issues and challenges the region faces, the participants are tasked with developing a community betterment project.

Williston residents will soon see lasting impacts with such undertakings such as the ’Plant Your Roots’ project in which graduate Louise Skaare looks to enrich running paths by planting trees along the trails.

During the ceremony, the refinement of skills shone as Sarah Beckwith shared reflections of her graduating class from the last seven months. To aid participants’ abilities to influence others, personal goals were set and honing their speechcraft through Toastmasters become an integral part of the development.

“Being slightly uncomfortable is where you grow,” Beckwith said. “And making mistakes is where you learn. It is so important in a time of texting and emailing that we be able to communicate our message.”

Guest speakers Wendy Gendreau and Darrel Carlyle provided speeches to resonate with the future leaders of Williston about achieving dreams and goals and what being a successful leader means.

After the graduates were awarded their Leadership Williston certificate and lapel pin, it was announced that the role of program director will pass from Priscilla Distevelt to Jaden Cymbaluk.

“Leadership Williston, for 20 years, has been a staple program of the chamber and the community,” said Williston Area Chamber of Commerce President Scott Meske. “I am very proud of the program in general. The people that are involved in something like this want to give back to the community.”
