CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (AP) - An elementary school in central Alabama has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for promoting better health and environmental education.

A.H. Watwood Elementary was honored among 41 public schools and six private schools across the country by the department’s Green Ribbon Schools Program, the Daily Home (https://bit.ly/1rlD0h2) reported. The recognized schools represent various grade levels from kindergarten through 12th grade.

U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. says the honorees have created 21st century learning environments that encourage students and teachers to perform their best.

“I congratulate these schools, districts and postsecondary institutions for their commitment to sustainable facilities, health and classroom practices,” King said.

Fourteen high schools, 18 middle schools and 27 elementary schools were selected.

Of those schools selected, 51 percent serve a disadvantaged student body.

“The healthiest, most inspiring school facilities can and should be another tool to level the playing field, particularly for underserved students,” King said. “These honorees are 21st century learning environments that encourage every student and teacher to perform at his or her best.”

Postsecondary schools were also honored, including the University of Montevallo.

“By inspiring young people to connect with their environment every day, today’s honorees are creating the next generation of environmental stewards,” said Christy Goldfuss, managing director of the White House Council of Environment Quality.
