WASHINGTON (AP) - Reports show officials halted rail traffic or lowered train speeds at several locations across Washington’s subway system last month after federal inspectors discovered problems with the tracks that had gone overlooked.

Federal safety reports obtained by The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/1O7N1De) detail dozens of Metro defects found by the Federal Transit Administration, which has taken over safety oversight.

The reports show inspectors found rails that were too far apart in several spots and incorrectly fastened rails along nearly 40 feet of track near the Stadium-Armory Metro station. In other areas, inspectors found broken bolts, faulty rail ties and major engine burns on the track.

Metro Spokeswoman Sherri Ly said Metro is working with federal officials and has “taken immediate action to address all items that are safety critical.”
