DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) - The Lawrence County Commission is hiring a contractor to bring in a crane and bucket and assess needed roof repairs for its century-old courthouse in Deadwood.

The Black Hills Pioneer reported (https://bit.ly/1YVDDse ) that the 2-foot-by-2-foot green cooper shingles that decorate the cupola high atop the courthouse are slowly shedding as the building endures the elements.

Lawrence County Deputy State’s Attorney Bruce Outka says several shingles have detached from the cupola and fallen to the ground, while other shingles are loose and ready to detach.

Lowe Roofing of Whitewood will use the crane to perform a thorough inspection and make recommendations for any necessary repairs.

The courthouse was dedicated in 1908 and built at a cost of nearly $110,000. It underwent a $5.8 million renovation and restoration beginning in 1990.
