SAN DIEGO (AP) - Police in San Diego said four officers shot and killed a suspected car thief after he nearly struck them at the end of a car chase.

Lt. Manny Del Toro said the officers began following 30-year-old Thongsoune Vilaysane Wednesday night when they saw him drive away from a house known for drug and weapons activity.

Del Toro told the San Diego Union-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1OqxGhk) the vehicle Vilaysane was driving was reported stolen. He led the officers on a short chase through the Encanto neighborhood before hitting a parked car.

Del Toro said the officers got out of their patrol cars to order Vilaysane out of his vehicle, but drove in reverse and almost hit two officers.

Del Toro said the officers opened fire in self-defense.

County prosecutors are investigating the shooting.
