KEIZER, Ore. (AP) - Police say a cat found mutilated in Keizer appears to have been killed by another animal.

Julianna Hales discovered the bottom half of the cat while walking her child to school on Tuesday. She posted a photo and a warning on Keizer’s public Facebook page and contacted the Keizer Police Department.

People who saw the Facebook post reported similar incidents of missing or mutilated cats in the area.

The Statesman Journal reports (https://is.gd/dxNwxd ) that the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife did not receive any reports of the death and did not investigate. Spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy says cougars attack prey in a manner similar to the cat’s injuries, but they are rarely seen in the Salem-Keizer area.

She says a bobcat or coyote is the more likely suspect.
