MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A group that calls itself the conscience of the Alabama Republican Party is supporting suspended Chief Justice Roy Moore.

The Alabama Republican Assembly calls the judicial ethics charges against Moore “politically motivated” in a statement released Thursday.

The group says the Republican Moore stands for traditional values at a time many elected officials are failing morally, ethically and otherwise.

Moore is suspended from his job as head of Alabama’s judicial system while awaiting trial on a complaint before the Alabama Court of the Judiciary.

The court will decide charges filed by the Judicial Inquiry Commission, which accused Moore of violating judicial ethics amid his opposition to same-sex marriage.

Moore is fighting the charges, which could lead to his removal from office for the second time in 13 years.
