KITTERY, Maine (AP) - Officials in Maine have launched an effort aimed at converting tourists into working residents.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1OkTBvu ) those stopping by the visitors’ center in Kittery are now greeted with Live + Work in Maine signs and a kiosk that gives users access to the program’s website. The initiative is meant to connect those who want to move to Maine with job opportunities in the state.

The program encourages people to imagine living in the state and provides employment possibilities in eight regions that could appeal to them. The kiosk at the visitors’ center gives the initiative exposure to many of the 34 million people who visit the state every year.

The effort comes as the state suffers from a declining labor force.
