HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man has denied accusations that he intentionally crashed his car into a pregnant woman’s Jeep.

Josef Leavitt pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and related offenses in connection with Tuesday’s crash in Haverhill.

Prosecutors say the Methuen man intentionally struck 24-year-old Deanna Clark in response to an argument reportedly over drugs.

Clark, who was seven months pregnant, is in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital. District Attorney Stephen Patten says her baby was born prematurely after the crash and is currently fighting for his life.

Leavitt was ordered held without bail.

His lawyer argued for no bail, saying his client has a minor record and no history of violence. His next court date is May 18.
