CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - Horry County council members are considering merging the police and sheriff’s departments in the only county in South Carolina that has two countywide law enforcement agencies.

Local media outlets report that council members asked an attorney Wednesday to look into the idea and report to council members next month.

Horry County Sheriff Phillip Thompson supports the idea and says the county police department was created more than 50 years ago because of a dispute between county officials.

Some council members say it’s time to merge the agencies.

County voters considered the matter in 1998 but voted down a merger.
