LOS ANGELES (AP) - The father and stepmother of a 15-year-old runaway girl who falsely accused them of child abuse have settled their lawsuit for more than $4 million.
The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1Yo88qL ) the LA County Board of Supervisors approved a $2.4 million payout to Craig and Wendy Humphries. State lawmakers approved an additional $1.7 million in October.
The Humphries’ lawsuit contended their civil rights were violated when a sheriff’s deputy placed their names on a statewide list of child abusers.
In 2001, the Valencia couple briefly went to jail after the rebellious teenager falsely told police that the two had abused her. All charges were eventually dismissed, and the Humphries sued after being told there was no way to remove their names from the database.
Their names were removed in 2011.
