DETROIT (AP) - A 56-year-old woman who was living without utilities in her Detroit childhood home has been found dead, the victim of a homicide before the house was set on fire.

Police say Gracie Hughes was stabbed and had other injuries. Her body was discovered early Thursday after the fire was extinguished in the dilapidated house.

The Detroit News (https://detne.ws/1TctJRE ) says the house hasn’t had water or electricity for years and is controlled by the Detroit Land Bank Authority, which owns thousands of vacant properties. Spokesman Craig Fahle (FA’-Lee) says the home was on a demolition list, but officials learned that someone was living inside.

Fahle says evictions don’t occur unless there’s a buyer.

A relative, Virginia Hughes, says Gracie Hughes was urged to leave for years but refused.
