NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a New York City police officer shot and wounded a man who pointed a gun at officers following a traffic stop.

It happened late Wednesday in Queens.

Police say when officers stopped a car, the driver got out and pointed a gun at them. An officer fired and hit the man in his right leg when he refused to put the weapon down.

At some point during the confrontation, police say the suspect bit an officer.

The suspect and the injured officer were taken to area hospitals for treatment. The suspect is in stable condition.

No other information was immediately available.
