MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Air National Guard’s F-16 fighter jets are flying an air defense exercise over the central sectors of the state.

Guard spokesman Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder says Thursday’s exercise is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the region surrounding McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

Snyder says the aircraft from the 169th Fighter Wing will be escorting a single civilian aircraft and the event should not cause any concern.

The exercise is coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration and trains Guard members in maneuvers that help defend U.S. air space.

The Guard has been taking part in such training as part of the nation’s North American Aerospace Defense Command mission since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
