NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - The Latest on the return of a Japanese tourist’s return to Niagara Falls to take on suspect (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

A grand jury has indicted a Niagara Falls man on charges of robbery, assault and sexual abuse in the December attack on a Japanese tourist during her visit to Niagara Falls State Park.

Robert Macleod is accused of throwing the woman to the ground and stealing her purse and shoes after she became lost Christmas night and asked him for directions.

Koyuki Nakahara returned to the U.S. last week to testify before the grand jury. Authorities say that without her testimony, the case against Macleod likely would have been dismissed.

Macleod initially was arrested about a week after the attack and pleaded not guilty. No phone listing was available for Macleod.

The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of alleged sexual abuse, but Nakahara has said she wanted to discuss her case publicly. ___ 12:15 a.m.

A Japanese tourist is being credited with helping to build a case against a man suspected of violently robbing her after she got lost and asked for directions during a visit to Niagara Falls in December.

Deputy Niagara County District Attorney Doreen Hoffman says Koyuki Nakahara’s recent return to the United States to testify was crucial in ensuring the case against suspect Robert Macleod wasn’t dismissed.

The Niagara Falls man was arrested about a week after the attack and pleaded not guilty to robbery and assault. He was released on bail.

Police and prosecutors have scheduled a news conference for Thursday, when they’re expected to release details of a recent grand jury proceeding that could bring additional charges.

Neither Macleod nor his attorney could be reached for comment Wednesday.
