VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - Ventura County officials are investigating a transient’s death as a homicide after his body was found in the Santa Clara river bottom.

Forty-nine-year-old Kenneth Sleiertin was discovered dead Sunday with a gunshot wound.

The Ventura County Star reported Wednesday (https://bit.ly/220bthJ) that shortly before the body was found, authorities responded to reports of gunshots in the area.

Sheriff’s officials say detectives are interviewing potential witnesses, including residents of a nearby homeless encampment.
