VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Beach Police Department has appointed its first liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The police department issued a statement Wednesday saying Sgt. Michele “Shelly” Meister has been appointed to the new liaison position. Meister has been with the Virginia Beach Police Department since 2002, and was promoted to sergeant in 2013.

Part of the liaison officer’s job will be to assist members of the LGBT community who are victims of violent crime and hate crimes.

Police say the liaison program is mirrored after a similar program that was introduced by the Norfolk Police Department in 2015. The program has been unanimously approved by the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission and Hampton Roads Pride.
