WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) - The board of Wisconsin State Fair Park has voted to fire the State Fair Park executive director.

The unanimous vote to fire Rick Frenette came Wednesday. The board voted to have chief operating officer Kathleen O’Leary serve as an interim replacement.

Frenette’s attorney, Franklyn Gimbel, says the matter that led to the board’s vote involved merit compensation for executives, including Frenette. Gimbel said Frenette wasn’t aware he was in the group getting the raise.

Gimbel says a request for merit pay increases went through, and that the allegation was that it violated “the Department of Administration method of dealing with those matters.” He says there wasn’t “illicit or illegal behavior” on Frenette’s behalf.

Board Chairman John Yingling says that it is “a board personnel matter,” and that Frenette and Gimbel were allowed to make their case before the board.
