PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A black bear has been spotted roaming through a popular park within Philadelphia’s city limits.

The director of the group Friends of the Wissahickon says the bear was observed swimming in the Wissahickon Creek in Fairmount Park on Friday morning.

Executive Director Maura McCarthy says she’s never seen a bear in the area.

McCarthy says she was told that the animal swam across the creek and disappeared into the woods.

It’s unclear where the bear came from. Bears are known to be in southeastern Pennsylvania, but McCarthy says it’s extremely rare for one to make it all the way to Philadelphia.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area and use caution while hiking in the park.
