CARTHAGE, N.C. (AP) - A truck passed a stopped school bus in Carthage and hit a girl as she was exiting the bus, sending the girl to the hospital.

Media outlets report that Thursday afternoon, bus 268 had come to a stop with its lights on and stop sign out when the 14-year-old student from New Century Middle School got off the bus.

A truck towing a trailer approached the bus from behind and swerved to avoid the bus. The truck then hit the bus and the student, throwing her 25 feet.

The girl was taken to Moore County Regional Hospital with a broken leg and a broken breast bone. The hospital said Thursday evening she was in “good condition.”

The driver of the truck was released, but charges could be filed.
