MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A councilman says he’s undecided on whether he’ll reconsider his vote against construction of a hog processing plant in Mason City.

On Thursday Councilman Bill Schickel told the Mason City Globe Gazette (https://bit.ly/1WuOnQt ) that he’s aware of a petition drive seeking support for the council to reconsider its 3-3 vote earlier this month. Schickel says the drive and other expressions of support for the Prestage plant are noteworthy.

City rules say only Schickel or either of the other two councilmen who voted against the project are eligible to seek reconsideration.

Prestage says the plant would have employed around 1,800 people. Plant opponents raised environmental issues and expressed concern about possible harm to property values.

The company says it’s pressing forward with plans to build the plant elsewhere in Iowa.
