AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Former Houston-area state Sen. Chester “Chet” Brooks has died.

Brooks died Wednesday at a Round Rock health care facility. Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Homes general manager Darryl Thompson had no immediate information Friday on a cause of death. Brooks was 80.

A funeral was scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Austin, with burial at the Texas State Cemetery.

Brooks grew up in Goldthwaite. He earned journalism and political science degrees from the University of Texas. Brooks served in the Navy before writing for the Houston Post.

Brooks was elected to the Texas House in 1962 and served two terms, then served 26 years in the Senate. The Democrat from Pasadena failed in his 1992 re-election bid.

Brooks was a retired brigadier general in the Texas State Guard.
