GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Goodyear police say officers shot and wounded a man after he opened fire on them.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Kutis says the man pulled out a gun and shot at police Friday when at least two officers responded to a 911 call about a man lying on a sidewalk and bleeding.

Kutis says the officers returned fire, wounding the man. No officer was injured.

The man’s identity wasn’t released, and Kutis said she didn’t know his condition.

She said the man told officers he had an explosive device in his backpac.

A Glendale Police Department bomb squad detonated the backpack to render it safe.

Glendale police spokesman Sgt. David Vidaure says no explosives were found.
