MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP) - Police in Mount Airy have arrested a Surry County man and charged him stabbing a woman to death at her home.

Police told local media outlets that 28-year-old Jordon Ross Lowdermilk of Dobson has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and motor vehicle theft.

The body of 80-year-old Claudia Smith was found in her home Wednesday. Police say she had been beaten.

Police said it appeared someone had broken into the home. Her vehicle was found abandoned of Interstate 77 in Surry County.

Sheriff’s deputies say Lowdermilk is also charged with assaulting a man who had stopped when he saw the car beside the road.

It was not clear if Lowdermilk has an attorney.
