RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina has moved one rung up the ladder when it comes to average teacher pay across the country.

The National Education Association announced Friday its salary estimates for the 2015-16 school year have North Carolina ranked 41st among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, with average pay of $47,985. It was 42nd the previous school year.

Revised numbers for 2014-15 calculated average North Carolina pay at $47,819. North Carolina moved up five spots in 2014-15 after legislators and Gov. Pat McCrory approved sizeable raises in 2014.

North Carolina’s current estimate is about $10,000 below the national average.

McCrory proposed average 5 percent salary increases for the coming year that would cover most teachers. House Republicans will unveil a teacher pay proposal in its budget next week.
