ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The executive director of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission is stepping down.

The commission said Friday that Kelley S. Coyner has resigned to pursue opportunities in research and teaching. The resignation is effective June 3.

Coyner was hired to lead the transit organization in March 2013. The organization’s director of transit programs and policy, Kate Mattice, will serve as acting executive director.

The 19-member Northern Virginia Transportation Commission is involved in planning, funding and promoting mass transit in the region.
