MILWAUKEE (AP) - Officials say the firing of the State Fair Park executive director this week came after he ignored the state approval process and gave himself and 31 other executives merit pay increases totaling about $78,000.

The board of Wisconsin State Fair Park unanimously voted Wednesday night to fire Rick Frenette. Laurel Patrick, a spokeswoman for the Department of Administration, tells The Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1NsRXI0 ) that the agency discovered a number of “significant irregularities” regarding pay increases.

Frenette’s attorney, Franklyn Gimbel, says Human Resources Director Ryan Burns told Frenette the Department of Administration had given approval for the pay raises. Gimbel says his client “slipped” by not confirming that advice.

Burns resigned Thursday following Frenette’s firing. A phone number for Burns could not immediately be found.
