SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary plans to retire in September.

The Statesman Journal (https://is.gd/GesZkF ) reports that the news about Jeff Premo was announced Thursday in Salem at an event marking the 150th anniversary of the maximum-security prison.

Premo prefers to be called a warden instead of the superintendent. He said in an interview after the event that he believes conditions at the prison have improved over the past 15 years and he expects to be involved in choosing his successor.
