NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Police say a 22-year-old family acquaintance accused of disappearing with a 5-year-old North Las Vegas boy has been freed from custody while investigators piece together what the two did during the 26 hours they were missing.

North Las Vegas police Officer Ann Cavaricci said Friday that charges weren’t immediately filed against Shaquille Pierce after he was found Thursday evening with Amari Connor at Sam’s Town hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

Cavaricci says the boy appeared to be unharmed, but was checked at a hospital after he was located.

Pierce reportedly told family members he and the boy were going to a youth center about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when they left the boy’s family home.

They were reported missing after Pierce didn’t return Amari home several hours later.
