WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Police say a man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times in Waterloo.

Authorities say Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Deputy Harold Oliver was on his way to work Thursday morning, when he saw 40-year-old Andrew Spates shot multiple times as he sat in a car in a convenience store parking lot.

Spates was transported to a hospital in Iowa City, where he is listed as being in critical but stable condition. Oliver arrested 26-year-old Daytrell Pendleton at the scene.

Pendleton has been charged with attempted murder, and his bond has been set at $500,000. It was not immediately clear if Pendleton has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
