TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - One of three men wounded in an early morning shooting at a Tempe residence where homeless people were allowed to camp in the back yard has died, police said Friday.

Police identified the man who died as 34-year-old Gregory Wheeler and said he was one of two men involved in an exchange of gunfire that followed an altercation. A third man also was wounded, police said.

Police Lt. Mike Pooley said the other two wounded men remain in critical condition. Their identities weren’t released.

Pooley said shooting occurred at about 5 a.m. and that officers found the wounded men in the large back yard and in a back-yard shed converted into living quarters.

The incident in a residential area near Price Road and Apache Boulevard drew a massive police response as well as firefighters to treat the wounded.

Police initially searched the area as they looked for a suspect, but Pooley later said a preliminary investigation indicated that the wounded men accounted for all those involved in the shooting.

Other people at the property were detained at the scene for questioning as police sought to learn circumstances of what happened.

The shooting occurred in the area of Price Road and Apache Boulevard. That’s just west of the Loop 101 freeway
