FALMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole is working with the University of Chicago and the U.S. Department of Energy on a new project called The Microbiome Center.

The project will research the function of microbes in different environments. Microbial communities of bacteria, viruses and fungi touch every ecosystem on Earth, including inside human bodies.

A spokeswoman for the Marine Biological Laboratory says the venture follows the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s National Microbiome Initiative. The initiative’s goal is to link the public and private sector to get a better understanding of microbiome behavior.

The federal energy department’s Argonne National Laboratory will also play a role.

The Marine Biological Laboratory is one of several marine science facilities in the Falmouth, Massachusetts, village of Woods Hole.
