BOSTON (AP) - Police are searching for the man who bludgeoned a young mother with a blunt object as she was walking her daughter to school in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.

The attack occurred around 7:15 a.m. Thursday as the unidentified 25-year-old woman was walking on Waumbeck Street with her 7-year-old while pushing her 1-year-old in a stroller.

Commissioner William Evans said an “unknown man” walked up behind the woman and hit her in the back of the head. Police aren’t sure what the weapon was, but it split the mother’s head open. She was taken to Boston Medical Center in critical condition.

Police didn’t say whether the assault was random or targeted, but Evans said the incident doesn’t appear to be a robbery because the woman’s pocketbook was found still in the stroller.
