DALLAS (AP) - A Florida man must serve eight years in federal prison for his role in a $10 million resort timeshare scam in the U.S. and Canada.

Rani F. Khoury of Apopka, Florida, was sentenced Friday in Dallas.

Khoury last July pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. He must also repay nearly $1.6 million and forfeit property in Orlando, Florida.

Prosecutors say the scheme attracted at least 5,000 victims, mostly people over age 55. Khoury was associated with Fabien C. Fleifel of Winter Springs, Florida.

Investigators say Fleifel hired telemarketers to call timeshare owners to solicit fees in a bogus promise of buyers.

Fleifel last year was convicted in Texas of multiple fraud counts and was later sentenced to 14 years, plus ordered to repay $1.3 million.
