MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County police say an officer shot a man after he wounded himself with a knife.

Police said in a news release that the shooting occurred Saturday night at a home in Middle River. A female officer went there in search of a suspect in a hatchet attack on two people that occurred at a home about a mile away. Police say a relative let the officer into the home.

Police say the man cut himself in the neck with a knife and then dropped it. According to police, the man then lunged toward the knife and the officer. Police say the officer feared for her life and fired one shot.

Police say the man was in critical but stable condition at a trauma center on Saturday night.
