WASHINGTON (AP) - As expected, late-night rides on Washington’s subway are coming to an end.

Metro says the system will close at midnight every night starting on May 29. The system had remained open until 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The earlier closures will help Metro launch a yearlong maintenance plan that’s meant to make the system safer and more reliable. A series of fires on the tracks have shaken confidence in the nation’s second-largest transit network, and ridership has dropped.

Metro officials have noted that late-night ridership has dipped significantly in recent years.
